4WD TRAIN, TECH and TREK – A Weekend Getaway

What is it:

A weekend of fun and an opportunity to pick up useful off-roading information from people who’ve been touring the Outback for many years. The accent is on family fun and learning.

Who are we:

Allan Whiting has been writing about 4WDs and bush travel for 35 years and runs the website. Phil Poulter’s company, 4WD Off Road Driver Training, was the first organisation to introduce nationally accredited 4WD training courses in NSW and today trains recreational and professional off-road drivers.


Two Days – Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. 4WD Train, Tech and Trek – Weekend Getaway is subject to a minimum of five vehicles – maximum of eight vehicles.


$ 495.00 per vehicle – price includes 4WD training for 1 driver – training for extra driver @ $50 (maximum two drivers per vehicle) Families are very welcome.

  • Mittagong Visitor Information Centre – Old Hume Highway (Main Street) Mittagong NSW

Training and Camping Venue:

  • River Island Nature Retreat, Wombeyan Caves Road


  • Camping only – you must bring your own tent, swag, roof-top tent or camper-trailer and all of your own camping equipment.

What’s included:

•    One day driver training (maximum two drivers per vehicle – please note all drivers must be licensed)
•    One day tag-along trek in the Southern Highlands region with lead and backup vehicles
•    Helpful hints for vehicle setup and packing
•    Do’s and don’ts for accessorising your vehicle
•    Great ideas on how to prepare menus and meals for both short or extended adventures
•    How best to set up a workable campsite
•    Off road camper trailers – handy hints on loading, towing and manoeuvering on and off road
•    Morning and afternoon tea both days
•    Lots of fun!


  • 4WD with low range gearing, camping equipment:  tent, beds, bedding, camper-trailer, cooking equipment, table, chairs….and a sense of humour!

Meals and Beverages:

  • Supply your own: lunch day one, dinner day one, breakfast day two and lunch day two.


Day One:  * Driver Training – learn safe and correct techniques for driving your 4WD off sealed surfaces.

Topics covered include

  • Tyre pressures
  • Wheel placement
  • Stall recovery/key start (manual vehicles)
  • Steep ascents and descents
  • Rocky terrain
  • Water crossings
  • Sand driving
  • ..and much more!

In the afternoon and evening we’ll discuss the arts of vehicle setup, vehicle accessories, preparing for those adventures that you always dream about and anything else that you want to discuss.

Day Two:  ** Touring – A drive day travelling through the NSW Southern Highlands and Tablelands exploring and putting your newly learned skills to the test.
