SRODRV003B – COORDINATE RECOVERY OF A 4WD VEHICLE USING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
This course covers three units of competency from the Certificate III Outdoor Recreation Industry Training Package. These include planning an outdoor activity, basic knowledge required to drive a 4WD vehicle and also advanced techniques used to coordinate a vehicle recovery. This course has been developed for participants requiring the appropriate skills to competently drive and also recover stranded/bogged 4WD vehicles.
The LEVEL 3 course is structured to give participants extensive hands-on experience in both driving techniques and safe methods of recovery; using electric winch, hand winch, recovery straps and other equipment required to recover bogged/stranded vehicles. The course is run consecutively over a two-day period.
SROODR002A is a theory session and topics covered include:
DAY ONE
- Trip planning, logistics etc.
- Selecting appropriate clothing & camping equipment.
- Food & water requirements.
- And more.
SRODRV001B & SRODRV003B are practical sessions and topics covered include:
DAY ONE
Consists of extensive driving, covering the following topics;
- Dirt/gravel road driving
- Tyres & tyre pressures for on and off road driving
- Obstacle assessment
- Wheel placement/articulation
- Stall recovery/key start
- Steep hill ascents & descents
- Steep hill ascents & descents in reverse gear
- Sand & mud negotiation
- Rocky terrain
- Negotiating water
- Minimal environmental impact
- Trip preparation
DAY TWO
Consists of “hands-on” recovery of bogged/stranded 4WD vehicles, covering;
- Review 4WD systems
- Identification & maintenance of ALL recovery equipment
- How to operate in a safe & environmentally friendly manner
- How to safely recover a bogged/stranded 4WD vehicle using single & multiple snatch straps up a steep incline
- How to safely recover a bogged/stranded 4WD vehicle using vehicle jack/s to recover a vehicle
- How to safely recover a bogged/stranded 4WD vehicle using an air jack
- How to safely recovery a bogged/stranded 4WDvehicle using a hand winch
- How to safely recovery a bogged/stranded 4WD vehicle using a vehicle mounted electric winch

There are several significant learning outcomes of this course; participants gain the knowledge to competently plan for an outdoor activity, participants gain experience and knowledge to competently drive 4WD drive vehicles off sealed surfaces. Also, participants gain experience and knowledge for the safe recovery of bogged/stranded vehicles.
